Following a number of enquiries in relation to yesterday’s media release by Minister for Regional Development, Jaclyn Symes, regarding Sharp Airlines’ operation to Warrnambool and Portland, I would like to clarify the current position.

The announcement only applies to the Melbourne (Essendon) – Warrnambool – Portland service. In recent years the route has sustained losses and requires a significant increase in traffic to ensure ongoing sustainability. For the next six months the Airline will work with the Councils, regional tourism bodies and industry to implement a targeted marketing campaign to increase passenger numbers on this route.

Sharp Airlines welcomes the funding support of the Victorian Government, Glenelg Shire Council and Warrnambool City Council to ensure the South West Region of Victoria retains an air service at least until July 2019.

The results of this campaign and support generated for the service will determine the route’s ongoing viability.

Sharp Airlines operates over 250 flights per week with 15 aircraft servicing 5 States in the Airline Charter and FIFO market. We carry over 100,000 passengers and 1.5 million kilograms of freight per annum. With bases in Adelaide, Melbourne (Essendon), Sydney (Bankstown) Launceston and Hobart our network continues to expand.

Sharp Airlines is continually growing and looking for new opportunities both in the Regular Public Transport, Charter and FIFO markets. With over 80 staff spread across a number of operational and maintenance bases, Sharp has a wealth of regional aviation expertise and experience.

Yours sincerely,

Malcolm Sharp
